Rapid Biofilm Detection

Indicon Gel provides a cost-effective, rapid visual indication of the presence of biofilm on a surface which may contain harmful microorganisms such as Listeria, Escherichia coli (E. coli) or Salmonella. When the product comes into contact with biofilm, Indicon Gel rapidly produces white micro-bubbles/foam within 2 minutes, providing a visual indicator of potential microbial harbourage sites.

Listeria Monocytogenes

Biofilms of Listeria Monocytogenes on food contact surfaces have been identified as an important pathway for pathogenic persistence and subsequent product contamination, which is why traditional cleaning methods using caustic detergents followed by disinfection do not work; and why Enzyme detergents need to be used because they are capable of breaking the biofilm, allowing subsequent disinfection chemicals to kill the bacteria inside and remove the contamination source altogether. 

“Hot spots” for Biofilms of Listeria monocytogenes are often found in the following locations: 

• Floors
• Drains
• Trolley wheels
• Conveyor belts
• CIP systems (e.g. pipes)
• Complex machinery with lots of alcoves/crevice’s
  
  

I have Biofilms – what next? 

If you identify Biofilms, you can either remove them through steam or mechanical action (i.e. scrubbing) BUT you must disinfect immediately to prevent the microbes from escaping the Biofilm and spreading around the factory.  We recommend applying our Listeria Disinfectant immediately after Biofilm removal.
